چکیده
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have played an increasingly dominant role in the current mobile society. Due to risky safety testing procedure, ultra-rigorous demands of facility, and complicated multiphysics nature issues, lack high-fidelity models describe behaviors lithium-ion upon abusive loading has significantly deferred further application LIBs. Herein, by assistance from ex-situ observation using X-ray Computed Tomography scanning technique postmortem characterization battery samples, we reveal formation process various internal short circuit (ISC) modes guiding our modeling. Strain-based ISC mode-dependent criteria are first developed establish mechanical-electrical coupling relationship. Particularly, a fully multiphysics-coupled model capable identifying describing entire evolution initial deformation final thermal runaway (TR) The demonstrates promising generalization SOC situations. Finally, is applied for 100% LIB mechanism deformation-different modes-TR. Results highlight power computational modeling understand underlying issues energy storage systems broader context.

Mechanism of the entire overdischarge process and overdischarge-induced internal short circuit in lithium-ion batteries
Lithium-ion batteries connected in series are prone to be overdischarged. Overdischarge results in various side effects, such as capacity degradation and internal short circuit (ISCr). However, most of previous research on the overdischarge of a cell was terminated when the cell voltage dropped to 0 V, leaving the further impacts of overdischarge unclear. This paper investigates the entire over...
متن کاملInternal short circuit mitigation of high-voltage lithium-ion batteries with functional current collectors
The safety of lithium-ion battery (LIB) becomes increasingly critical as the specific energy and cell capacity rapidly increase. Based on the modified current collector technique recently developed for nickel–cobalt– manganese active materials, here we investigate high-energy LIBs based on functional current collectors (FCC). Two high-voltage active materials were tested in our experiments: lit...

Electrochemical energy storage systems are categorized into different types, according to their mechanisms, including capacitors, supercapacitors, batteries and fuel cells. All battery systems include some main components: anode, cathode, an aqueous/non-aqueous electrolyte and a membrane that separates anode and cathode while being permeable to ions. Being one of the key parts of any new electr...

متن کاملState of health and charge measurements in lithium-ion batteries using mechanical stress
Despite the fundamental importance of state of health (SOH) and state of charge (SOC) measurement to lithium-ion battery systems, the determination of these parameters is challenging and remains an area of active research. Here we propose a novel method of SOH/SOC determination using mechanical measurements. We present the results of long term aging studies in which we observe stack stress to b...
